This sewing tutorial is for our book lovers out there.
Sew this wonderful book cover for your hardcover books and take them with your while it's nicely protected.
The measurements in this tutorial are based on standard-sized hardcover novels (approx 6.5" x 9.25"). The book cover will fit various thicknesses of books due to its adjustable back side.
Supply List and cutting dimensions:
- Exterior Fabric - 26" x 10.75"
- Lining Fabric - 20" x 10.75"
- Interfacing Pellon 809 or similar when using lighter weight fabrics such as quilting cotton - 21.75" x 9.5"
- Elastic - 9.5"
STEP 1
On the wrong side of the exterior fabric, draw a line ½” from the edge on all four sides (fig. 1)
This is your seam allowance line.
STEP 2
Mark all vertical lines as indicated in the picture (fig.1)
-
3.5 inches from the left short edge
-
6.5 inches from the left short edge
-
13 inches from the left short edge
-
3.5inches from the right short edge
-
6.5 inches from the right short edge
The space between 6.5” and 13” line becomes the front of the book cover, marked in red in (fig.1)
If you want to place embroidery designs or a specific part of your design on the front make sure it is centered to this area.
STEP 3
On the right edge of the exterior fabric, mark 1 inch from the long edge on top and bottom. Draw a diagonal line to connect the 1 inch mark and the 3.5inch line within the seam allowance line.
This will be the slanted edge of the cover.

FIG.1
STEP 4
On interfacing, mark ½” from the long edge and 3” from the short edge.
Connect these two marks with a diagonal line and cut off the excess edge. (fig.2 & fig.3)
FIG. 2
STEP 5
Place interfacing on the outer fabric wrong sides together, line up the left side of your interfacing with the 3.5” line on the left of your exterior fabric. (fig.3)
For the other 3 sides, the interfacing should be a little smaller than the drawn seam allowance line. Fuse it and let it cool completely.

STEP 6
From the slanted interfacing side, measure 6.5” and baste elastic in place, right side together. (fig. 4)

FIG. 4
STEP 7
Put Exterior and Lining right sides together, sew along non-slanted short edge. (fig.5)
You should be able to see the 6.5” line you drew at the beginning through the interfacing. The next step will be easier if you re-draw the line on the interfacing. (fig.6)
